My name is Charles Wilkins. I come to you from Flotilla 05-10 in New York City where I've been an Auxiliarist since 2007. Currently, I'm the Directorate Vice Chief of International Outreach where we help partner nations build the search and recovery operations through Auxiliarists in other countries. I'm also an instructor, coxswain, and IS officer.
The Auxiliary has offered a rewarding ride thus far. I've had the opportunity to work on missions alongside talented Auxiliarists. One of the fun highlights was ringing the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the USCG Auxiliary. The training has helped develop me as a leader of both myself and others. The skills come in handy in my day job as a marketing manager where I help Fortune 100 firms build their brands by leading teams of marketing strategists, technologists, and creative developers.
The training has also informed my lifelong sailing hobby. For example, the risk management tools and first aid came in handy on several ocean sails, including a transatlantic race in 2015 where we had both a crew injury and a rig failure and had to decide what to do. After a quick risk assessment, we abandoned the race to return to shore for repairs. Fortunately the crew member recovered and we were only penalized the time. So, we were able to make up our pace and win our division, arriving in England 21 days later.
I live with my wife and daughter in suburban New Jersey.
