Marine Safety

Marine safety is one of the eleven missions of the United States Coast Guard. Coast Guard personnel inspect commercial vessels, respond to pollution, investigate marine casualties and merchant mariners, manage waterways, and license merchant mariners.

The Auxiliary qualifications mirror those of the Active Duty – minus any law enforcement or military activities. All Marine Safety programs open to Auxiliarists are based on the needs of the individual Coat Guard Sector.

There are four Divisions in the Prevention Department devoted to the Marine Safety program:
  1. Commercial Vessel Activities
  2. Port and Facility Activities
  3. Prevention Outreach
  4. Communication and Education

Fifth Southern’s Marine Safety Program emphasizes these Divisions by educating Auxiliarists and encouraging their involvement. Monthly online sessions delve into a variety of Marine Safety environmental programs. These include pollution outreach programs, education, and two Personal Qualification Standards or PQSs (Prevention Outreach Specialist (AUX-MEES) and the Auxiliary Administrative and Management Specialist (AUX-MSAM)).

These online MS Forums occur on the second Thursday of each month. Registration may be accomplished by visiting the District Calendar.

Opportunities for inspecting commercial fishing vessels, uninspected passenger vessels, containers, and other opportunities abound, depending upon the needs of the Sector. Please contact you ADSO-MS for more details.
