The Navigation Systems (NS) mission is multi-fold. First and most importantly, it is designed to have trained members who can alert the Coast Guard to federal aids to navigation (ATON) and private aids to navigation (PATON) discrepancies. Secondly, the program is designed to assist the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) with discrepancies to its charts and publications such as the Coast Pilots. Thirdly, the program is geared to use trained members to examine bridges for discrepancies to it lighting and fender systems. And finally, the program is designed to include basic and advanced training for members to become qualified to do each of the above parts of the program.
The NS program is vital to the maritime industry as it provides trained members who can insure that when they observe a discrepancy that it will be promptly reported to the proper authority thus making it safer for those operating in the waters of the U.S.
