USCG Auxiliary Safety Program

Our Safety Mission

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is fundamentally a safety organization. Our principal missions are Recreational Boating Safety and supporting the Coast Guard in maintaining safety throughout the maritime domain. Our goal—whether on water, in air, or on land—is to ensure no harm comes to anyone.

Building a Safety Culture

To reduce mishaps, accidents, and injuries, we've implemented a national Safety Management System (SMS). This formal, top-down approach helps us develop safety policies, manage risks, and promote safety throughout our organization. This system is:

  • A priority in our Strategic Plan
  • Included in Commandant Instructions
  • Built on four foundational pillars

The Four Pillars of Safety

  1. Safety Policies: Establishing the right rules and guidance
  2. Risk Management: Assessing and mitigating risks effectively
  3. Safety Assurance: Verifying our procedures work and identifying improvements
  4. Safety Promotion: Teaching safety lessons throughout the organization

Our Just Culture

Every Auxiliarist should know: It's OK to report mishaps and mistakes without fear of retribution or punishment. If you mess up, 'fess up—we all learn from these experiences.

This "Just Culture" is the foundation of our safety approach. It creates an environment where everyone feels comfortable reporting incidents and hazards, allowing us to continuously learn and improve.

Join Our Safety Journey

We invite you to explore our website for safety information and resources. Together, we're building an Auxiliary-wide approach where each member embraces safety as a personal value.
