                           About the Coast Guard Auxiliary

Steve Johnson, DCDR

Welcome to Division 2-Hiawatha, District 8-Western Rivers Region of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. We are proud to be a part of Team Coast Guard and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Team Coast Guard consists of active duty, reserves, the Auxiliary, and civilians. The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed civilian, volunteer part of Team Coast Guard. Auxiliarists volunteer their time and resources in order to augment and support the Coast Guard in their missions. The Coast Guard Auxiliary is primarily tasked with recreational boating safety, but you will find Auxiliarists participating in all Coast Guard missions except for direct law enforcement and direct military missions. Auxiliarists have no law enforcement authority and no formal military training. We are all civilian volunteers.

Division 2 is proud of our rich history. The Auxiliary was founded in 1939 as the Coast Guard Reserve to support the Coast Guard during the war effort. The Auxiliary was officially separated from the Coast Guard Reserve by an act of Congress in 1942. Division 2 has four flotillas proudly serving the Hiawatha Valley: Winona since 1942; Rochester since 1946; La Crosse since 1994; and Prairie du Chien since 2010.

Division 2 is primarily responsible for the area between Lock & Dam 3 in Red Wing, MN, and Lock & Dam 10 in Guttenberg, IA. Other waterways in the area of responsibility include the Chippewa River from downtown Eau Claire to the confluence with the Mississippi River; the Black River from Mile Marker 4 to the confluence with the Mississippi River; and Lake Lewis & Clark near Yankton, SD. The communities of service include Lake City, Winona, Eau Claire, La Crosse, Rochester, Mankato, Prairie du Chien, Yankton, and Sioux Falls.

The Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary, and Division 2 want to thank you for taking the time to look us up. The links here are for your convenience. The Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary, and Division 2 do not endorse any third party product or service. Please feel to contact us should you have any questions, concerns, comments, etc. We look forward to hearing back from you!
