Temporary Reserve Uniforms Blue & Khaki - 1941

Washington, D.C., 10 November 1941.

  1. The Uniform Regulations, United States Navy, 1941, are hereby made to apply to Coast Guard personnel in relationship to the Coast Guard as they apply in the Navy, subject to such modification as may be promulgated from time to time in order to adapt them to the needs of the Coast Guard.

  2. These regulations supersede Uniform Regulations, U. S. Coast Guard, 1930.

All Coast Guardsmen who, on 31 October: 1941, were authorized to wear the surfman uniform shall provide themselves and wear the articles of uniform as shown in the third column of the table in Article 5-53, This included the USCG Temporary Reservists. The uniform consisted of;

COAT -- For enlisted men at stations, other than chief petty officers: The blue coat shall be of dark navy- blue cloth or serge. Garment Specifications. Single- breasted, 4-button, lined sack coat, with patch pockets, seam back, no vent, cut shapely.

Pockets - Four outside, horizontal patch pockets one on each hip and one on each breast; lower pockets to be about 7 1/4 inches wide slightly rounded corners at bottom and no flaps or button.

Buttons - Four Coast Guard gilt buttons (28-line). Top button to be about l 1/4 inches below breast line on a line with buttons on breast pockets; bottom button to be on a line with top of side pockets, other two buttons equally spaced between. Two 22 ½ line Coast Guard gilt buttons, one in the top middle of each breast pocket. Every enlisted man in the Coast Guard shall wear the distinguishing mark of the Coast Guard, a shield one inch in height, on the right arm midway between the top of cuff and elbow. The color of the shield shall be white on blue clothing and black on khaki.

CAP -- A blue cap and a white cap are prescribed, to be the same as prescribed for chief petty officer except with respect to cap device. The cap device shall be brass.

TROUSERS -- These trousers shall be of conventional cut, cloth, or serge. When wearing, the coat and trousers shall be of the same material and match in color.

NECKTIE -- The necktie shall be of plain black and to be worn four-in-hand. Shirts shall be of neckband type or with collar attached and made of plain white linen or cotton, Black Shoes; high and low. oxford shall be plain and of black leather with box toes.

SOCKS -- Socks shall be of plain knitted material. Black socks shall be worn with black shoes.

BELT -- A plain black web belt approximately 1 3/8 inches wide fitted with buckle.
