Commodore Thurlow joined the International Falls flotilla of the USCG Auxiliary in 2006. Since
then, she has served in elected officer positions at all levels up to District Commodore. She
currently serves as the Flotilla Commander of her small flotilla in northern Minnesota. She has
held staff positions at all levels. She is presently the DSO-IS for District 9CR, Auxiliary Senior
Officer Course Instructor, and Deputy Director for Support of Public Affairs. Before her current
positions, her past national staff positions include DVC for Marketing, Deputy Director of
Response, Assistant National Commodore, Diversity and Inclusion. Her qualifications include
Program Visitor, Vessel Examiner, Qualification Examiner, Boat Crew Coxswain, Instructor,
Uninspected Passenger Vessel Examiner, TCO, CA-1, and PA-1.

She spent 20 years as a public school teacher, working as a Media Specialist,
English/communications teacher, and Engineering Design teacher. She holds a Masters's
Degree in education with certificates in Engineering Design from Project Lead the Way and
education technology from St. Cloud State University. She has served on the City Council,
Planning Commissions, long-range planning team, local animal shelter president, and Rotary
and Lions Club members. She is an AKC Earthdog judge and enjoys her Lakeland Terriers-
Married for over 50 years to her husband Tom, also an Auxiliarist; they enjoy life on a
houseboat near Voyageur’s National Park, life in central Minnesota, and winters in Texas. Tom
and Sue enjoy spending time with their two children and two granddaughters.
