Who We Are And Our Primary Missions

We are the volunteer civilian portion of the United States Coast Guard. Our main mission is to augment the Coast Guard when needed in addition our other missions are for the education and safety of the boating public. We accomplish this in many ways such as complementary vessel inspections, safe boating classes, stand radio watches for boaters needing assistance and also safety patrols on Lake Norman, These are just a few of the items we do for the benefit of the public regarding water safety.

Sydney Newcombe - Award for Program Visitation

"There are many things that led to me joining the Auxiliary. When I was a child, me and my childhood friend would always play "military." We were always on some kind of mission to save the world. Fast forward a little, I'm sitting in my second grade classroom and the United States was attacked on September 11th, 2001. I very clearly remember watching the second plane crash into the second tower on the TV we had in the classroom. Even at that young age I was overcome with so many emotions. Throughout school I have studied the attack many, many times. Each time the need to join the military and fight back grew stronger and stronger. I also have many military family members to include my grandpa who was in the National Guard. So, I knew I would have my family's support. Unfortunately I ended up being medically declined. This crushed me! Fast forward, almost 10 years later and my college professor sends the class an email advertising the USCG Auxiliary. I didn't miss a beat and sent my application that night! I have always had the strong urge to serve and protect those around me. I want to help keep others safe and teach them how to do that and to be prepared in the event of disaster. The Auxiliary gives me the ability and opportunity to do that and be a part of something that is bigger than myself." - Sydney Newcombe
