Paddlesports have become very popular in recent years. Many people are choosing paddling because it’s affordable, the equipment is easier to store, requires less maintenance, and is more flexible compared to powerboats or sailboats. This trend is especially noticeable in the inland waterways of the Northeast.

Did you know? About 22 million Americans enjoy paddlesports! Every year, around 100,000 canoes and 350,000 kayaks are sold, according to industry data.

Safety Concerns in Paddlesports

As paddlesports grow, safety has become a concern. While boating accidents overall have gone down, accidents involving paddle craft have increased. In fact, paddle craft are now involved in over 32% of boating accidents each year.(2023 CG Statistics)

The AUXPAD program

To improve paddlecraft safety, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary created AUXPAD. This program helps keep paddlers safe both on and off the water. AUXPAD safety ambassadors work with the paddling community by offering:
