Return to Flotilla 1-9's Home Page.
Flotilla 19 traces its ancestry to 11 September 1962, when fourteen Auxiliary members from other 12th District Peninsula-based flotillas requested establishment of and membership in a new Coyote Point Flotilla 19. Those first members were Jack Pettit, Leslie Pirie, Harry Sharer, Herbert Walter, Jr., Orrin French, Norwood Patterson, Michael Roskin, Howard Feldman, Curtis Van Sandt, Frank Hannig, Sybil Van Sandt, Mary Feldman, Theresa Hannig and Genevieve French. That application cited San Mateo Junior College as the principal location of the new flotilla, on the grounds of what now is the Coyote Point Natural History Museum. Since that time, Flotilla 19 has met at the Coyote Point Yacht Club, an elementary school in Foster City, the National Guard Armory in San Mateo and at Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco at SFO. In the 1970's and 1980's many Flotilla 19 members moored their boats at the Coyote Point Marina, although a sizeable contingent known as our "Delta Navy" docked near Bethel Island in the Delta and conducted many Delta-based Safety Patrols. Since that time, Flotilla members have berthed their boats at Coyote Point, Sierra Point/Brisbane, Redwood City, San Leandro and other locations. Early Flotilla records indicate significant activity in all four Auxiliary cornerstones, including Boating Safety classes, Courtesy Marine Examinations (now "safety checks"), Operations and Fellowship. In operations, Flotilla 19 has been active in vessel, aviation and land-mobile (radio) operations. Flotilla 19 members have advanced to senior positions within the US Coast Guard Auxiliary District 12 (now District 11 North), and our members have served as District leaders in Operations, Communications and other operational areas. For nearly six decades, Coyote Point Flotilla 19 has served the Boating Safety and Search & Rescue needs of San Francisco Bay-based boaters. We invite any member of the boating public who is interested in joining to please contact us.
