Interaction with the Public

The primary mission of Public Affairs Department of US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 84 Sarasota is to represent the public image of the United States Coast Guard and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.   We present, educate and inform the general public in Sarasota area of the role we and our active duty partners play in promoting safety on or near the water. We are the public face of Team Coast Guard’s commitment to community service which is almost entirely dedicated to water and boating safety.

TagFlotilla 84 also has a Facebook page with our current activities.  We use a variety of tools and resources to deliver these messages on how to stay safe and keep your family and your property out of danger. We deliver these messages through electronic and social media as well as a vigorous schedule of live public events. Last year, we proudly introduced a new platform to present this critical information to the public. All of our public showcases we redesigned as Team Coast Guard Marine and Boating Safety Presentations.

This is a picture of Flotilla 84 doing vessel exams at 10th Street rampThroughout the year, we host and are present at many public events.  Some are in partnership with local Sarasota Police Fire and Sarasota Marine Police units, We are also frequently found at major public events such as Marine and Boat Shows, Boat Races and many others widely attended events.

Recently, Coast Guard Aux Flotilla 84 proudly unveiled our new presentation platform as ourPA events template for all upcoming events. Our unit proudly presented multiple modular stations on the many facets of service US Team Coast Guard provides to our community! The key in these modular stations was public interaction and passing on our knowledge and making the public aware of the many community services available from us .That became our biggest success!

Our unit Flotilla 84 put forth interactive modular public presentations on some of the many important services and educational topics we support. These included;
  • CommunicationsFlotilla holds public events to teach the public about safe boating
  • Navigation
  • PFDs and Safety Equipment
  • Public Education Classes
  • Vessel Inspections
  • Line Heaving Challenge
  • Nautical Knots Challenge
  • CG Aviation
  • Recruitment
  • Search and Rescue and more

We also teach equipment that is recommended for safe boatingPaddle boats require unique skillsOne of our demonstrations is how to tie knots

Each learning module was hosted by one of our F84 trained specialists in each category! We even launched a new learning platform at year end in 2019, the first time our presentation even included an expanded hands on opportunity to learn about Paddle Craft and Kayak safety, which pose such an important safety concern in our area.

Interested adults and their kids were able to see, feel and touch these vessels and interact and learn from some of our very experienced instructor members!! The reaction was of course incredible!

In January of every year we swear in the new slate of officers for the upcoming years

Together with the entire membership, we carry out the mission of the Auxiliary in serving Sarasota (our Area of Responsibility)
