John Mietus joined the Auxiliary in 2021 and most recently commanded the District 5, Southern Region "Flying Flotilla" that supports USCG Air Station Atlantic City through the AUXAIR program. He became interested in crisis communications and public affairs while supporting the 2024 Key Bridge response in Baltimore; he is an AUXPA3 public affairs specialist and has completed the FEMA Basic Public Information Officer Course. John is a Division Staff Officer for Marine Safety and enjoys active-duty augmentation, assisting with container and facility inspections at the Port of Baltimore and training as a pollution responder. He also is training as a small boat station watchstander and hopes to resume training as an Air Observer or AUXDRONE operator. He is an Operational Auxiliarist (AUXOP) and has received an Auxiliary Achievement Medal, an Auxiliary Commandant Letter of Commendation, and a Meritorious Team Commendation with Operational Distinguishing Device.
John continues to practice aviation regulatory law part-time before U.S. government agencies. Over 35 years of practice, his range of clients in the U.S. and overseas has supported his interest in international law. Unfortunately, these clients have not offered meaningful opportunities to expand his German and Polish language skills to legal work. John holds a J.D. from Georgetown University and a B.A. in Government and Politics from the University of Maryland.
