The Carl Luhrs Award is a much-esteemed award established by the
Traverse City Flotilla to recognize the outstanding effort by a member. The award was established in 1998 to honor the late Carl Luhrs, a founding member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Traverse City Flotilla.
Mr. Luhrs joined the US Coast Guard Auxiliary in 1959 as only the fourth member of the Flotilla. He remained active in the Auxiliary right up until he passed away in 1997, an amazing 38-year commitment.
Throughout his long tenure in the Auxiliary and Flotilla, Mr. Luhrs was active in all facets of the organization and epitomized the four cornerstones of the Auxiliary: member services, recreational boating safety, operations and marine safety, and fellowship.
While most of the Traverse City Flotilla's new members may not have personally known Carl Luhrs, his example is held in high regard, and it is considered an honor to be recognized for this award.
Past Flotilla Commanders select annual recipients from active Flotilla members who worked to promote the four cornerstones during the prior year.
