Introduction
Electronic GPS-capable chartplotters play an important role in all modern life, including on the water supporting CGAUX initiatives. Smartphones and tablets have come a long way and are suitable for use as a backup or even primary chartplotter. The District looked into developing a mobile app for AOR points, and determined the best course of action was to develop and maintain a GPS database file of AOR points that can easily be used on almost any GPS app (no-cost and paid). This is called a KML file. Below you can find the file itself and instructions for using it with MAPS.ME. This file with MAPS.ME supports offline GPS capability (exact capabilities depend on smartphone or tablet - some do not have a GPS chip that works without cellular service; verify you device's exact capabilities).
You will need:
- GPS-capable smartphone/tablet
- MAPS.ME app
An alternative file (GPX format) is also provided for use in paid apps such as Navionics Boating and can be used in many popular chartplotters. Refer to your app or chartplotter manual for use of this file. Link to the GPX is at the bottom of this page.
