Flotilla Commander

                                         Chet Bowman, Flotilla Commander

United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 15-8 is located in Hernando Beach, Florida at the corner of Shoal Line Road and Calienta Street. We have approximately 100 volunteer members who are dedicated to assisting the United States Coast Guard with its recreational boating safety mission and by serving as a force extender whereby we work directly with members of the Coast Guard in performance of their non-military and non-law enforcement tasks. In this regard we assist the Coast Guard on search and rescue missions and we provide radio watch standers, translators, instructors and food service support as requested by the Coast Guard Station at Yankeetown.

Our members teach 25 public education topics throughout the year including two that meet the requirements for Florida’s Boater Safety Card. We also teach classes on the proper use of marine radios, GPS units and nautical charts; introductory classes on coastal navigation focusing on the gulf waters between Aripeka and Chassahowitzka; and classes designed specifically for paddlers. A complete schedule of our public education classes for 2017 is available on this website. For information about specific classes please contact Flotilla Staff Officer for Public Education Susan Watkins  or call at 352.340.8848

In addition, free vessel safety checks are provided to the boating public. These safety checks are intended to help local boaters make sure that they are in compliance with Florida’s boating safety laws. A trained Vessel Examiner works with boaters to ensure that their boating safety equipment is up-to-date and serviceable. To arrange a free vessel safety check, please contact Flotilla Staff Officer for Vessel Examinations John Fahey or call at 352.596.2823.

Safe boating materials are available for free at more than 40 locations around Hernando County. These include the Hernando Beach and Bayport boat ramps, most marinas and sporting goods stores, the Hernando County Offices on Forest Oaks Drive, and many other local businesses. We are grateful for the support we receive from our recreational boating partners. Without their assistance we would not be able to reach as many boaters.

We are the uniformed Auxiliary of the United States Coast Guard and we wear its uniform proudly. We offer extensive member only training at no cost to the member during the year. If you would like to learn more about joining us please contact our Flotilla Staff Officer for Human Resources Dennis Skonecki or call 352.600.7646 .

Semper Paratus,

Chet Bowman
