VSC Q & A

Where are Vessel Safety Checks (VSC) performed?
A Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat − at a Marina, Home, Storage, or other Location where the vessel can be safely evaluated.

How much does it cost to have a VSC performed?
VSCs are provided by the USCG Auxiliary absolutely free of charge.

How often should I have a VSC performed on my vessel?
You should have a VSC performed annually. Decals awarded by the USCG Auxiliary need to be renewed annually.

How long does it take for a Vessel Safety Examiner(VSE) to conduct a VSC?
A vessel safety check usually takes 30 to 45 minutes, depending upon the size and complexity of your boat.

Does a dinghy require a separate VSC?
Yes! VSEs are accustomed to conducting VSCs on dinghies, and it only adds 10 to 15 minutes if conducted during the same appointment.

What's In it For Me?
Safety! Vessels passing safety checks are awarded a U.S. Coast Guard / Auxiliary Decal that informs the US Coast Guard / Auxiliary, Harbor Patrol, Local Sheriff's & Police, and other boating law-enforcement & safety agency's that your boat was in full compliance with all Federal and State boating laws during a safety check for that year.

What if I Don't Pass?
If your boat does not pass, no citation is issued. Instead, you are provided a written report in how to correct any discrepancies, and the VSE will offer to schedule a follow-up VSC (also free!) once all corrections are made.

Why Should I Request a Vessel Safety Check?
Safety! The peace of mind that your boat meets federal safety standards and that in an emergency you will have the necessary equipment to save lives and summon help.

In many cases boating insurance agencies offer discounts for vessels which undergo a Vessel Safety Check every year. All decals and safety checks are void December 31st of year they are inspected, they are also void should the operator /owner fail to maintain the vessels equipment or the vessel itself to the standard at the time of the safety check.
