Safety begins with safe equipment and alert and aware operators!
Flotilla 72 would like all boaters to always remain safe and avoid unnecessary accidents and incidents. We encourage boat owners to frequently check to make sure their boating equipment is ready for use and up to the task. We encourage operators to get recurring training on boating safety, equipment operation, and navigation and safety procedures. But, most of all, we encourage everyone on the water to be alert, be safe, and have fun!
Vessel Safety Checks
The Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary inspection of your boat conducted by members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. These inspections are voluntary and are a good way to review safety issues and procedures and to verify your boat or personal water craft is ready for safe operation.
Inspections are performed at your vessel at a mutually convenient time when it is not in operation whether it is in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway and typically takes approximately 30 minutes. No citations are issued and no safety check results are reported to any enforcement agency. But, passing the safety check earns a Vessel Safety Check decal to be prominently displayed that shows the Coast Guard and others that the vessel has passed the inspection during the current boating season.
An example of some of the items checked include:
- Registration and numbering
- Personal Flotation Devices
- Distress signals (flares, horn, etc.)
- Fire extinguishers
- Ventilation
- Navigation lights
- Battery cover and connections
- Safety procedures and awareness
These items are currently required by state and federal laws and, when deficient, can result in a citation and possible fines if your vessel is inspected by the Coast Guard. The Vessel Safety Check gives you a risk-free way to check that you meet the legal minimum requirements. Vessel Safety Check Re-Inspections
What if your boat is deficient and does not pass the safety check? No problem. You will receive a written report showing how your boat was assessed that you can use to help correct deficiencies. And, when you are ready, we will re-inspect your boat and issue a decal when it passes. It’s that simple!
To arrange for your free safety check, send us an e-mail at [email protected]. When you do go boating, don't forget to file a float plan!
