Edmonds, WA, Is 14 miles North of Seattle n Puget Sound. Its Auxiliary Flotilla is N0. 12; that is, Flotilla 2. Div, 1 and in the 13th CG District. Flotilla Commanders elsewhere should envy Edmonds Flotilla Cdr Dell E. Peterson, for in his unit there is no deadwood, and members are more work-happy than uniform-or-flag-happy. On the whole, the flotilla has just about come up to the long range goal of the Auxiliary; that each flotilla 75 per cent of the members be rated Courtesy Examiners and 50 per cent be rated Instructors; and while the national average is 65 facilities per 100 members, the flotilla's average is 83 per 100.
The member's boats, with the exception of two outboards, are inboard cruisers from 25 to 40-footers, and range from express cruisers to heavy-weather craft that cruise the year around. The flotilla operates on the waters of the Upper and Lower Puget Sound and most members cover the U.S. and Canadian San Juan Islands in their cruising. Alaskan waters are no novelty there. The flotilla was established in May, 1961, with 11 members; nine of them owning outboards. Soon began a swing to inboards and inboard-owning members. Meetings were held alternately at each member's homo. Dr. Arnt Petterson was the first commander. Operations are now taking a good deal of the member's time and attention. Due to the transfer to Viet Nam of several CG vessels from the area, an additional burden has been placed on the flotilla. To facilitate rescue operations the unit has established and emergency operations center at the Edmonds Police station. Emergency calls are received there and filtered to the auxiliarists from a master list which permits 24-hour availability of boat, owner and crew. The flotilla ahs three members with Auxiliary Operational (AUXOP) rating, the Auxiliary’s highest. Three members in a 29 member flotilla is far above the national membership average that there’s no comparison.
As for courtesy examinations, with 75 per cent of the members working at it, by mid-year 1965 the flotilla had topped by far the other units in the Coast Guard District. One member, Sam Cowan, won national recognition, having received a citation for having the highest score for examinations in the nation, in 1964.
The Public Education Program includes supplementing lectures with a practical demonstration by flotilla members at the yacht harbor, covering such subjects as anchoring, rules of the road and whistle signals, distress signals, and lights. An announcer explains each exercise to the students over a public address system. Upon the demonstration’s completion, participating boats dock, and everyone is invited aboard to meet the skippers and crew, inspect each type of boat and ask questions. This has proved very effective, and even some rather experienced boatmen taking the course have volunteered that they learned a new wrinkle or two.
