Vessel Safety Checks (VSC)...
A Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat − ranging in locations from marina to your driveway. A vessel safety check usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. If you have any questions or want to schedule a VSC, please email Mr. Larry Orlans, FSO-VE ([email protected]) and a confirmation will be sent to you via email.
Why do I need a VSC? Vessels passing safety checks are awarded a U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Decal that informs Coast Guard, Auxiliary, Harbor Patrol, Sheriff & Police, as well as other boating law-enforcement & safety agency's that your boat was in full compliance with all Federal and State boating laws during a safety check for that year. Best of all every Vessel Safety Check is 100% Free of charge!
What Type of Items Are Checked? life jackets, registration and numbering, navigation lights, ventilation, fire extinguishers, distress signals (flares, horn, etc.), battery cover and connections. All of these items are currently required by state and federal laws and if missing or non-operating, can result in a citation if your vessel is inspected by the Coast Guard or NJ State Police.
Additional Recommendations: first aid kit, anchor, fuel management, reporting accidents, VHF marine radio, contacting NJ State Police or CG Auxiliary, Float Plan, mounted fire extinguisher, GPS equipment, de-watering device or pump, additional lines, Boating Safety Courses
What if I Don't Pass? If your boat does not pass, no citation is issued at that time. Instead, you are provided a written report detailing how to correct any discrepancies. You can then reschedule a second VSC.
