Suddenly In Command

Suddenly in Command LogoIn association with Carteret Community College with instructor Sue Hamann, Flotilla Commander, USCG Auxiliary.

Cost:  $25 per person.  No fee for USCG or USCG Auxiliary 054-20-02 members

Designed for the first mate and boating partner with limited boating skills and experience, this class emphasizes those skills needed to safely bring the vessel home or get help in the event the skipper becomes disabled.  The course identifies the emergency equipment necessary to avert danger at sea or to obtain help.  The proper use of the equipment, accessibility and methods of storage are discussed.

Techniques for the proper use of the VHF-FM radio for the various stages of distress and what you need to know before you call for help are discussed.  Discussion items include things you should know about your vessel in order to get it back to port in the event the skipper is disabled.  Scenarios where the first mate has to take command are discussed in depth providing the participants with what they might be faced with and how they might cope in those emergency situations.

We intend to help you take charge, assess the situation, establish priorities, protect life and property, get help and move your boat if you have to.
