Qualifications - Public Education Aides (PE Aides)

Your Flotilla Public Education Officer, FSO-PE, is responsible for helping you to become an Aide and otherwise involved in Public Education.

The award ribbon for earning this qualification has two light blue and two dark blue vertical stripes:

Auxiliary Public Education Service. Award

USCG AUX Public Education Service Award

Division 6 is very pro-active in Public Education (PE). 67 leads the nation as one of the top three most active educators of the boating public.

Public Education is credited with indirectly reducing the number of accidents and fatalities in the last decade or so by educating the public in preventing possible mishaps. By preventing accidents, the loss of lives is reduced. We offer various classes including Boating Safely classes in English and Spanish (developed originally by our own Mario Gutierrez).

PE offers an excellent starting level as an Aide - you can help register, grade and support the administration of the classes. Eventually, as you gain credentials and experience, you can become an Instructor and teach.

PROCESS: To qualify as an Aide, first speak with your Mentor and the Flotilla Staff Officer for Public Education (FSO-PE). Then sign up with your Flotilla Staff Officer Member Training Officer (FSO MT). You will be directed by them to read materials and on how to assist.

QUALIFICATION:  This is a hands-on training, not requiring book learning.

UNIFORM: You may use your ODU uniform, long, to act as an Aide. You may also wear your Trop Blue uniform if you have one already, but it is not required for Aides. (Instructors are expected to wear the Trop Blue uniform).

REPORTING: Remember to report your hours as defined in the Form 7029 as soon as you complete the activity. Your FSO-IS can assist you with any questions.

Hint:  Starting as an aide will be very helpful to this program and it will give you a broad overview of our approach to boating safely. You can sit in on the numerous sections, becoming more informed about the content. This will be very helpful to you as you undertake other programs and also train you to be an instructor.
