Flotilla 13-04 has a long history of active Operations involving the following components:
Training: Members are prepared to become qualified crew and coxswains for on-water patrols. An instructive dockside and on-the-water training culminates in a qualification examination (QE). Once qualified as crew, members may elect to train to become a coxswain, making them responsible for running patrols, search and rescue, training, and advanced navigation.
Patrols: On-water patrols of the Upper Keys in our area of responsibility. Focus is on boating safety and environmental protection by ensuring all boaters observe rules governing the Sanctuary Preservation Areas (SPAs). Carysfort Light is the primary SPA in our area.
Tandem Patrols with Coast Guard: Patrols and training with USCG Station Islamorada both in the classroom and on the water improve our skills, and assist the active duty with their required training. In these drills we may role-play a vessel in distress, practice set-ups for retrieving and towing vessels, rehearse for catastrophic events, or support the Coast Guard with maintaining safety perimeters for special events.
Partnering with Local Flotillas: Our flotilla provides crew and coxswains to Upper Keys Flotilla 13-08, and vice versa, in order to properly staff missions requested by the Coast Guard. This spirit of cooperation with 13-08 allows both flotillas to schedule more operational patrols and increases opportunities for training.
