Mission Bay Flotilla at Laurel Street VSC Station

The USCG Auxiliary station on North Harbor Drive, at the end of Laurel Street, is a permanent location, where boaters can have their vessels examined and receive safety information. The facility was reopened in the second half of 2024 by USCG Auxiliary Harbor Flotilla following a hiatus due to the Covid pandemic. Currently, it is staffed during two Saturdays every month, when boaters with moorings in the bay and at Harbor Island and Shelter Island can bring their vessels to the dock for a free vessel safety check.
Mission Bay Flotilla has taken over responsibility for leading one of the two monthly events throughout the 2025 boating season. Saturday, March 29 was our first vessel safety day at the location.
Boaters who moor their vessels in the bay at San Diego Mooring Company mooring balls are required to have their vessels checked annually. We are there to offer this service at the Vessel Safety Check Station with no appointment needed, so we don't really know if we will be busy with safety checks or whether we will simply pass out boating safety literature to interested people.

On our first Saturday leading the day, Paul Connors and Mark Holmes staffed the facility, along with Auxiliarist Charles Festa, who recently passed the exam for Vessel Examiner and needed to get five supervised vessel safety checks done to complete his qualification as Vessel Examiner. George Glover of San Diego Harbor Flotilla was also there to offer his experience and support.

The day turned out to be a busy one and the dock was almost constantly occupied by vessels calling in for a vessel safety check. Despite the wind kicking up later in the shift, rocking the dock and making docking and undocking of boats a challenge, we completed 10 vessel safety checks in total. Charles Festa worked hard and completed all his five supervised exams, so we are delighted to welcome him to our dedicated team of examiners.
