There are two prerequisites for an AUX instructor to become an NJ Safe Boating Instructor:

  • Must be a current Auxiliary Instructor
  • Must have either 10 years of documented recreational boating experience OR be currently Auxiliary Crew certified.

The Crew certification is preferred; however, the 10 years of documented recreational boating experience may be accepted.

The Auxiliary State Liaison Officer is:

                William Castagno at [email protected]

Here is the procedure for becoming an NJ Safe Boating Instructor or re-certifying as one:

1.  All communication with the NJ State Marine Services Bureau (NJSP MSB) is through the AUX State Liaison Officer (SLO).

2.  Send a request to become a NJ Safe Boating Instructor or to recertify (must recertify every three (3) years) to the SLO

3. The SLO will send the prospective applicant a short list of information that is required to send the member’s request to the NJSP MSB

4.  Once the SLO receives the information the SLO will establish a member’s AUX/NJ Safe Boating Instructor file – for recertification will add to the file – and send the request to the NJSP MSB

5.  The NJSP MSB will send the prospective instructor (or instructor) the application documents along with a list of instructions for completing the documents – the same documents are the same for initial application and recertification – a copy of the NJ Instructor Manual, a copy of the NJ Boating Regulations Manual, and copies of reference material

6.  The applicant will complete the documents (four of which must be notarized) to the SLO along with a copy of the AUX Directory page that shows that the AUX member is current in their AUX certifications and a photo for the NJ Safe Boating Instructor ID Card. The SLO will review and record the documents. The documents must be sent to the SLO as one PDF document attached to an email – the ID photo is sent as a separate JPG attachment to the email

7.  The SLO will send the application documents and ID photo to the NJSP MSB for approval – this step takes about five (5) to fourteen (14) days

8.  When the NJSP MSB approves the application, they will tell the applicant to complete the background check form – there is a charge for the background check which is not done by the NJSP MSB – do not send the SLO a copy of the form,  but inform the SLO when it is sent – this takes about seven (7) to (14) days

9.  The NJSP MSB will inform the applicant when the background check clears and will send the applicant the Triennial In Service Exam – there are a few versions of the Exam, but all are very similar

10 . The applicant will send the completed Exam to the SLO to review for completeness

11.  The SLO will review the Exam, record it and forward it to the NJSP MSB

12.  The NJSP MSB will correct the Exam and send a copy of the corrected exam to the applicant and inform them that they either passed or did not pass the exam. This takes about five (5) to fourteen (14) days.   If the AUX instructor passes the Exam the NJSP MSB will ask the applicant to send them some information for their NJ Safe Boating Instructor ID Card.
