Each year, members of the Flotilla inspect more than 100 bridges on the Upper Hudson, Erie and Champlain Canals, Lake Champlain, and their tributaries. Each bridge is examined for proper lighting configurations, obstructions in navigable channels, degradation of fenders, and for general compliance with USCG Bridge Permits. In the picture an area bridge exhibits three such discrepancies: a chain dangles into the channel, posing a hazard to boaters; and two lights that should be set at the bottom or "lip" of the bridge are turned up, which could cause confusion to a night-time boater navigating the channel under the bridge.
The Auxiliary is also responsible for verifying the proper locations and operations of nearly 100 buoys, from lateral aids that mark channels to boating exclusion zones near swimming areas or sensitive infrastructure.
Auxiliarists also regularly engage in "Chart Updates," using technology to inform NOAA of changes or errors in published navigational charts.
