JOIN the Ocean Reef Flotilla!

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed, civilian, volunteer arm of the U.S. Coast Guard. We support all Coast Guard missions except military action and direct law enforcement, focusing on boating safety, search and rescue, and environmental and waterway protection. There is a local flotilla of the Auxiliary based at Ocean Reef.

The Auxiliary is a distinctive organization that lets you serve your community while learning valuable skills. Whether you're an experienced boater or new to maritime activities, we provide comprehensive training in navigation, radio communication, safety procedures and many other fields. Members choose from diverse roles including vessel examiner, instructor, admin, or patrol crew – with flexible time commitments that fit your schedule.

At Ocean Reef we are in a unique position, with the Atlantic on one side and Florida Bay on the other. There are thousands of boats within and around our community. You'd be joining a team of dedicated volunteers sharing an interest in maritime safety and service. We can use your skills, plus, you'll gain access to advanced training, leadership opportunities, and the satisfaction of knowing you're helping keep our waters safe.

The Coast Guard and the Auxiliary operate under the Department of Homeland Security. The path to membership involves training in boating safety, operations and systems within the Auxiliary, security checks, and an application procedure. It is about a two-month process. Our local Ocean Reef flotilla will provide you a mentor who will guide you step by step through the process, most of which is done online on your own schedule. Once you become a Basic Qualified Member you are free to choose your own path within the Auxiliary, deciding when and how you would like to specialize. You may also transfer membership to any other Flotilla in the U.S. if life takes you away from The Keys.

If you are a U.S. citizen over 17 years old, please consider joining us in fellowship, training and service. Ocean Reef Club affiliation is not required.
