The US Coast Guard Auxiliary is the civilian volunteer component of the US Coast Guard, established in 1939 by an act of Congress. The Auxiliary’s mission is to promote and improve recreational boating safety, provide trained crews and facilities to augment the Coast Guard, and enhance public awareness and support of the Coast Guard. By joining the Auxiliary, you can make a difference in your community and your country, while enjoying the rewards of being an Auxiliarist.
What is a Coast Guard Auxiliarist?
- Recreational boating safety: Auxiliarists conduct vessel safety checks, teach boating safety courses, distribute safety literature, and participate in public affairs events to educate the public about safe and responsible boating.
- Operational support: Auxiliarists assist the Coast Guard in missions such as search and rescue, marine environmental protection, port security, aids to navigation, and icebreaking145. They provide trained crews and facilities, such as boats, aircraft, and radio stations, to augment the Coast Guard’s operational capabilities.
- Administrative support: Auxiliarists help the Coast Guard with administrative tasks, such as data entry, record keeping, budgeting, and personnel management45. They also provide expertise and advice in various fields, such as law, engineering, medicine, and information technology.
As you can see, Auxiliarists do a lot of valuable work for the Coast Guard and the nation. If you are interested in joining the Auxiliary, you can visit this website to learn more about the eligibility requirements, application process, and training opportunities. You can also find a local flotilla near you and contact them for more information.
Why Join the Auxiliary?
By joining the Auxiliary, you will have the opportunity to increase your skills in boating, leadership, and administration. You will receive specialized training in seamanship and related skills, which will not only make you a better and safer boater but also provide you with the confidence to help others. Additionally, you will have the chance to meet and connect with other Auxiliarists at meetings, training sessions, patrols, and social events, where you can share your boating experiences and make lasting friendships.
As an Auxiliarist, you will not only be helping your community but also supporting the Coast Guard through direct operational and administrative support. You can take part in search and rescue operations, stand radio watch at the Coast Guard Station, work with the Marine Safety Office on pollution matters, or work in the Recruiting Office. You can wear the Coast Guard Auxiliary uniform and become part of Team Coast Guard.
Auxiliarists are not paid with money but with satisfaction in serving their community and supporting the Coast Guard. You can choose to participate at a level tailored to your individual capabilities and provide boating safety classes for youth and adults or examine recreational vessels for safety equipment to ensure that your neighbors will be safe on the waterways.
In all activities, you will enjoy fellowship with other Auxiliarists. The Auxiliary is known for its good old-fashioned hospitality, and friends, neighbors, and interested members of the public are always welcome to attend one of our flotilla meetings. You will have the chance to participate in cruises, rendezvous, and other fun and social events.
Join the Auxiliary today and be part of the action to help save lives!
