Commander Josh W. Buck

Commander Buck is currently assigned as the Deputy Sector Commander at Sector Long Island Sound where he oversees the daily operations of over 2,000 active duty, reserve, civilian, and auxiliary members. He serves as the Alternate Captain of the Port, Officer-in Charge of Marine Inspection, Federal Maritime Security Coordinator, and Federal On-Scene Coordinator for Connecticut and Long Island New York.

His previous assignments include the Prevention Department Head at Sector Long Island Sound, Chief of Waterways Management at Sector New York, Marine Inspector tours at Marine Safety Unit Houma, Louisiana and Sector New York, International Quality Auditor at Force Readiness Command in Washington, D.C., and Investigating Officer at Sector New York. In his marine inspector role in Louisiana he oversaw vessel and barge new construction projects during key growth years of Port Fourchon in the Gulf of Mexico. As a marine inspector and investigating officer in New York, he managed and supported examinations and inspections for thousands of foreign and U.S. vessels, and completion of hundreds of marine safety investigations, including key coordination with the National Transportation Safety Board on multiple casualties. At Force Readiness Command he was responsible for ensuring United States compliance with International Maritime Organization requirements and codes. His audit findings led to leadership awareness and actions regarding confined space entry, occupational health monitoring, Cruise Ship National Center of Expertise policy, and marine inspection quality improvements. In his six years in the Waterways management and Department head roles he was responsible for Domestic Ice Breaking and oversight of six cutters (four 65’ harbor tugs, and two 140’ Bay class ice breakers), four Aids to Navigation Teams, and marine transportation system management of the Port of New York and New Jersey, Hudson River, Port of Albany, three major Connecticut ports, and Long Island New York, including two of the highest capacity passenger ferry systems in the country. He also managed and supported numerous large-scale marine events including the annual United Nations General Assembly, Sail Grand Prix, U.S. Navy Fleet Week Parade of Ships, and Macy’s July 4th Fireworks.

Commander Buck is a 2005 graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), where he majored in Logistics and Intermodal Transportation. He traveled the world as a USMMA deck cadet on container and bulk ships where he visited countries such as Spain, Italy, Mozambique, Bangladesh, South Africa, China and Taiwan. He holds a Master’s degree in Information Technology Management, and a Doctorate in Business Administration degree with a leadership specialization. He also obtained certifications as a Maritime Port Executive and Quality Management System Lead Auditor.

Commander Buck’s military awards include a Meritorious Service Medal, two Coast Guard Commendation Medals, two Coast Guard Achievement Medals, the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and the permanent Marine Safety Pin. He also received the Doctoral Study of the Year award from Walden University in 2016. 

He currently resides in Trumbull, CT with his wife Christina, his two daughters, Taylor (17) and Alexis (11), and his sons, Dominick (15), Christopher (13) and James (9).
