WHAT IS DIVERSITY?
(Flotilla 10-5 2121-2124 Strategic Plan for the Enhancement of Diversity and Inclusion)
The dictionary defines diversity as "The Condition of having or being composed of differing elements." To break it down to a word . . . variety.
Most people are aware of the measurable attributes of race, gender, age, and ethnic background, but diversity is much more. Our variety of cultures, skills, physical characteristics, and experiences are just as important when discussing aspects of diversity. These are difficult to measure, but none the less a part of what makes a diverse workforce. Each of these traits brings its own perspective and skills to the workplace.
Why do we need diversity in our workforce? Is it important?
Well, consider this, where would the Coast Guard Auxiliary be without ideas and vast experiences? The diverse workforce increases inclusion, strengthens teams and can give varied viewpoints to problem solving and new initiative ideas.
Diversity is not Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO).
Diversity is a management process concerned with equity or fairness and is not legally required.
EEO focuses on equality and equal access.
EEO is legally-based and primarily concerned with protected classes. Compliance with EEO policy is mandated by law. EEO employs corrective and preventative measures for discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual discrimination, and equal opportunity. The Office of Civil Rights handles EEO, and they manage the complaint process.
There are various ways and resources to help increase diversity in your flotilla. A few examples are:
Optimize training and education in the value of workforce diversity.
Expand outreach to underrepresented populations.
Consider setting up a diversity council or task team.
Select one or two areas to focus on for the year.
Establish relationships with schools that have diversity in their student body.
