Diversity Training Exercise

 What is Diversity?

Objective: This brief (15 minute) activity and discussion is intended to show
that diversity is more than our ethnic, cultural, economic, social, age, or physical
differences; Rather Diversity is what each of us brings to the USCG Auxiliary -
helping to make it a better organization.
Instructions: Ask participants to raise their hands in response to the following
questions. Depending on the time allotted to this exercise, you can expect to spend
about two to three minutes on each question and a brief discussion.

Questions:

  • Was anyone born in another state? Country?
  • Who can read music? Who can speak another language other than English? What Language?
  • Who has graduated from college? Graduate Degree?
  • Was anyone born in the first half of the last century-(prior to 1950)?
  • Does anyone have an identical twin?
  • Who is single, married, widowed? (pick one)
  • Who has a medical background above CPR? EMT, PhD, RN, PA. etc?
  • Who has trained vocational skills? Plumbing, carpentry, electrical etc.
  • Who has children, grands, greats?
  • Has anyone been an educator? What discipline? What level?
  • Who has traveled to another country? Where?
  • How many can drive a manual transmission car/truck?
  • Has anyone lived on a farm/ranch?
  • Who has an air pilot’s training?

 

From the diversity of our responses, we can see that our differences are what
makes our organization strong. No one of us is alike. We are strengthened by our
differences. We are all different is some way.
