Why use this method to do it? In short, risk. This makes an automatic, permanent record in more than one place, and gets sent to the appropriate people. If using another method, you are trusting someone to retain and be able to provide proof of assignment to duty in the event something occurs and you need to provide that proof in the future to the Auxiliary, Coast Guard and/or DHS for insurance or other reasons.
