Digital Selective Calling (DSC)
DSC allows the user to communicate with other boaters who have DSC radios. It functions much like a phone but requires transmitting and receiving through your radio microphone. You must have a MMSI (Mobile Maritime Service Identity Number) to send or receive calls.
Mobile Maritime Service Identity Number (MMSI)
MMSI (Mobile Maritime Service Identity Number)is a nine-digit (MMSI) number that identifies your boat. The MMSI number is a bit like a phone number for your boat, and all DSC capable equipment (including AIS units) associated with the specific vessel should use the same MMSI number, since the MMSI serves to identify the vessel, not the equipment. If you sell your boat, the MMSI number is normally transferred with it.
Why use a radio equipped with DSC?
With the push of a button, your DSC radio will send an automated digital distress alert containing your Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) number, position, (if interfaced with GPS), and the nature of distress to other DSC-equipped vessels and rescue facilities. As a result, the Coast Guard is able to respond more quickly and to more accurately identify the location of the distress call. Sun Life Marina at Buffalo Harbor State Park
Formerly the NFTA Small Boat Harbor, the site is now part of the New York State Parks System with a private Marina Operator (Sun Life Marina). Marina slip holders park in assigned areas which are marked for "Slip Holders Only" and must have a valid Sun Life Marina Parking Sticker. There is also parking for patrons of Charley's Boatyard Restaurant for those visiting the area. At the south side of the property is located a nautical themed playground with areas for different age levels.
New public launch ramps are now located at the south side of the marina.

Float Plans
Why should you take the time to prepare a float plan? The answer is simple... there are just too many facts that need to be accurately remembered and ultimately conveyed in an emergency situation. Without a float plan you are counting on someone else, a friend, neighbor, or family member to remember detailed information that rescue personnel need in order to find you. Information that can make a difference in the outcome.
