Flotilla 12-09, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary partners with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) to provide to you, the boating public, with an 8-hour Basic Boating Safety Course.

Here are some of the details:

Anyone born on or after January 1, 1978 must successfully complete a boating safety course before operating a motorized vessel, including personal watercraft, on Delaware waters.  The Basic Boating Safety Course offered by Flotilla 12-09 satisfies the requirement for Delaware's mandatory boating education.

Course subjects include:

Know your boat:  Types of hull shapes; types of propulsion systems; differences between power, sailing, and personal watercraft.

Before you get underway:  Vessel capacity; float plans; fueling; trailering; boat ramp courtesy.

Operating your boat safely:  Casting off; docking; navigation rules; navigation lights and night navigation; sound signals; aids to navigation (buoys and markers); anchoring; ECOS use.

Legal requirements:  Vessel registration and numbering; unlawful operation; personal flotation devices; fire extinguishers; navigation lights; visual distress signals; sound producing devices; personal towing (waterskiing); discharge of waste, oil, and trash; actions after an accident.

Boating emergencies:  Risk management; boating accidents; personal injuries; carbon monoxide injuries; weather emergencies; summoning help.

Enjoying watersports:  Responsibilities; paddlesports; water skiing; scuba diving; sailing; fishing; hunting.

All course materials will be provided, however, attendees should bring their own note-taking materials.  Food and drinks are not provided; attendees should bring their own lunch and beverages.

A written test covering the information presented during class is required and will be administered at the end of the lecture session.  Attendees should plan on staying an additional hour following the lecture session to complete the written test.  DNREC scores each test and provides results directly to each attendee via regular mail.  A passing score will result in the issuance of a completion certificate.  This certificate must be carried with you anytime you are underway in Delaware waters.

The cost of the Delaware Safe Boating Course is $20.00, which covers all course materials and personal attention from our friendly, knowledgeable, and courteous certified USCG Auxiliary instructors.
