Welcome to the Boat America Course Registration Page
Hosted by U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 095-47-02
and qualifies students for a Wisconsin Boating Safety Education Certificate. Many insurance
companies offer discounts to those who successfully complete the course.
Course Details
Each course is 8 hours long, split into two 4-hour classes. Please allow additional time each day
in case classes run long.
Tuition: $27.00 per student (includes the Wisconsin Boating Safety Education Certificate
fee).
Eligibility:
- Students must be at least 12 years old.
- Students under 16 must be accompanied by a parent.
What to Expect After Registration:
- You will receive a confirmation e-mail and a textbook in the mail. Please review the
textbook before the course.
- Food and drink are not available at the classroom locations. Please plan accordingly.

Introduction to Boating:
- Types of boats (power boats, sailboats, outboards, etc.)
- Boat engines and uses
- Basics of family boating
Boating Law:
- Registration and regulations
- Required safety equipment
- Federal and state boating laws
- Personal watercraft requirements
Boat Safety Equipment:
- Personal flotation devices
- Fire extinguishers and sound-producing devices
- Visual distress signals and other essentials
Safe Boating Practices:
- Alcohol and drug awareness
- Docking and mooring
- Steering, fueling, and anchoring techniques
Navigation:
- U.S. Aids to Navigation system
- Buoys, beacons, and navigation rules
- Collision avoidance and sound signals
Boating Problems:
- Hypothermia and emergency procedures
- Accident response and equipment failures
- Carbon monoxide awareness
Trailering and Storing Boats:
- Trailer equipment and towing techniques
- Launching, retrieving, and storage tips
Enjoying Water Sports With Your Boat:
- Responsibilities of the boat owner and passengers
- Safety guidelines for water-skiing, fishing, scuba diving, Windsurfing, Sailing and river boating
- Proper handling of hunting gear while boating
