Basic Requirements (just to get in the plane)

  1. Want to fly (well dah)
  2. Submit your a "DO" paperwork. This is the longest part of the process so get your paperwork in early, and then work on the rest of the steps while waiting for the DO to come thru.
    1. Having a DO is a non-waiverable requirement for any Aux aviation crew member (Observer, aircrew, pilot)
    2. The DO paperwork (SF-86) is a requirement even if you already have a secret clearance.  However, if you already have an active security clearance the investigation can take a shorter time.  Don't count on it but we have seen it take as little as a week once the AUX process has been correctly completed.
  3.  Sign up for AUX-17.
    1.  Aux-17 is a requirement PRIOR to being designated for any aviation position including Observer. a description of the course is <here>
    2. this course is held multiple times a year around the country as a C-School class and is in heavy demand so sign up as soon as you can.  Very few funded slots are available so pay particular attention to local courses.
      1. Prerequisites for getting into Aux-17
        1. The Introduction to Risk Management Course (100202)
        2. Observer Trainee or higher
        3. Completed and passed Aviation Exam A
        4. Core Training (MANTR, ICS-100 and ICS-700)
        5. Members must have submitted their DO security request through eQip and cleared by DirAux for Training
    3. The C-School schedule is found <here>
    4. Short Term Training Request (STTR) is required. An STTR is found <here>
  4. Most aviation related documents are <here>
  5. The section in the aviation training manual that talks about "entering the aviation program" is section A (page 2-3). The training manual is <here>.
  6. Review the "becoming Qualified" page found on the R-Directorate (Response) page.
    1.   Specifically review the "becoming Qualified" PDF <here>
  7. Pass the Aviation Exam Part A Exam (basic Observer skills test)
    1. Test found at the National Text Center<here>.  (at the top of the page)
    2. Materials for  the test
      1. Auxiliary Aviation Training Manual (Comdtinst M16798.5B) <here
      2. Auxiliary Operations Policy Manual, COMDTINST
        M16798.3 <here>
        1. There are aviation related sections scattered within the document but the primary sections are Annex 1, 2 and 3 (at the back of the book)
      3. Auxiliary Manual (comdtinst M16790.1G) <here>
  8. Obtain a Auxiliary Medical Screening (or have a current FAA Medical of any type)
    1. Screening within 36 months if <40
    2. Screening within 24 months if >=40
    3. Screening form found <here>
  9. Have a "DO" favorable investigation completed
    1. An Observer Trainee does not need a DO to participate in training missions, however, most training actually happens during operational missions so getting a DO as soon as possible is important.
