U.S. Coast Guard Station Jones Beach: A Proud History of Service

Originally established in 1851 as “Station Short Beach,” the facility was named after a small spit of land east of Jones Inlet. The first wood-framed structure, built by the U.S. Life Saving Service, was replaced in the 1930s by a two-story brick station with a watch tower and boathouse, built under the Works Progress Administration (WPA) during President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration.

On June 15, 1990, a new, modern facility was dedicated, combining operations, administration, and berthing under one roof. A new boathouse was also constructed, featuring equipment storage, maintenance shops, and a boat haul-out system. At that time, the name officially changed to U.S. Coast Guard Station Jones Beach.

Today, Station Jones Beach is a multi-mission unit with primary responsibilities in search and rescue, as well as law enforcement and environmental protection. Its area of responsibility spans from East Rockaway Inlet to Gilgo Beach, including Jones Inlet and the surrounding back-bay waters of southern Nassau County.
