Vessel Safety Check - a Free Service to You

Boaters, fishermen, or anyone who uses a vessel on the water - Do you have the minimum safety equipment on your vessel to meet your state and federal requirements? Request your FREE vessel safety check (VSC) to have a certified vessel examiner (VE) from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary help you ensure the safety of your vessel.

A Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is NOT an official Coast Guard boarding.  It is made solely as a helpful safety service to you, the boating public. The safety check is voluntary, and results are reported ONLY to you, the vessel owner.

What if my boat doesn't pass the Vessel Safety Check?

No problem!  There is never penalty or negative consequence from a failed VSC.  In fact, a VSC gives you an opportunity to correct safety issues BEFORE you encounter official law enforcement boardings that can result in fines.  If an issue is discovered on your VSC, you simply receive a check list of any correction your vessel needs.  The Coast Guard Auxiliary does not issue fines or penalties. If you like, you can even schedule a follow-up exam after corrections are made, to make sure your vessel is ready for the water.  Best of all, this service is 100% free to you.

What is checked?

A vessel examiner checks multiple items. Specific requirements vary according to your vessels' size, type and method of registration. For example, a documented 26' sailboat, a 40' powerboat, and a personal watercraft all have different requirements.Your certified Vessel Examiner will be familiar with the regulations for your boat.

Have a Vessel Examiner contact you

For a free check of your boat's safety equipment, contact our local Vessel Examiner Darin Bashaw at [email protected].  Or if you're not local to North Alabama, fill out the form at this link.

You can also check your own vessel!

Checking your own vessel is highly encouraged. The better you know your own equipment, the more prepared you will be. However, a qualified vessel examiner must examine your vessel in person before issuing you a safety decal.
