From paddlecraft to sea-going ships, the U.S. Coast Guard's goal is that all vessels are safely operated and properly equipped.

The easiest way to make sure your boat complies with the myriad of safety rules is a Vessel Safety Check (VSC), a free public service of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Auxiliary examiners know the rules that apply to your boat and are happy to discuss them with you.

A qualified Coast Guard Auxiliary examiner will meet you at your vessel and conduct a courtesy examination of safety equipment carried or installed and certain aspects of the vessel's overall condition. VSC requirements parallel federal and state requirements with regard to equipment and vessel condition. Passing vessels are awarded a VSC decal. There are several probable perks when your boat wears the VSC sticker.

Have your boat inspected at the beginning of each boating season to assure you are up to date with all current safety requirements.

If your boat does not pass, nothing is reported or written up. The Auxiliary examiner will explain what is needed to bring your vessel into compliance.
