Public Affairs of the Auxiliary
Public Affairs is Everyone’s Job
Every member is a member of the Public Affairs Team
We need a strong public affairs program to
• boost the CG image
• build moral
• spur interest in our public education and Vessel exanimation programs
• recruitment (which is Division 10's goal this year)
• and to develop a strong media relationship
The FC’s involvement is that he/she represents the flotilla and is our spokesperson. They should know what the missions of their flotilla are and the events that are coming up so they can tell whoever they meet about them.
Public Educators meets large groups of the public at their classes and should take this opportunity to inform them about VSC and recruitment through a 5 minute speech (This is how I joined). They should be taking a pro active approach by not just putting out brochures but by making up packets and giving them one as they pick up their certificate. You can have separate bags for fisherman, recreational boaters, and so on. The PA Department did surveys to discuss what other flotillas are doing to increase our students taking ABS courses some of which included:
• Having one family member paying full price and all others paying $10 and they only receive one book.
• Giving a $5 discount when doing a new advertisement so we can track the worth of the new advertisement.
• Combining a class with another event
Vessel Examinators also can participate in the PA program by speaking to the boat owners individually as they give their VSC.
• Finding out their interests in boating
• having brochures on hand ready
• Asking if they have a boating certificate, tell them of a class coming up.
Every member can attend events in their community, boat shows, and parades in uniform and tell the public about the Auxiliary. Have business cards to give the public to contact us. Is one simple idea.
Every member can write news releases and articles for publications which should be sent to their PA officer for dissemination to the media outlets.
Our communication with the public is designed to tell the public who we are and what we do in order to increase understanding and support. We need to let the public know we’re here to help. We will prevent accidents and save lives by educating the public. Show the public that the Auxiliary takes an active role in the community.
