COMO Dan Maxim Award

Updated 11/22/22

There are two important updates to the COMO Daniel Maxim Award for Excellence in Education for 2020 and future nominees. The first is in timing of due dates of nominees to the next level of review. As per the initial instructions, flotillas should consider their candidates and nominate their most deserving instructor based on performance during the entire year. Remember that this activity can include both Public Education and Member Training. Please look at the entirety of the nominee’s performance including how well they adapted to the virtual delivery of classes as well as their performance for any classroom sessions occurring prior to the suspension of classroom delivery.

COMO Daniel Maxim Award for Excellence in Education

Based on feedback from Districts requesting additional incentives and recognition for the best Instructors, the Education Directorate developed a prestigious national level award recognizing the best-of-the-best Instructors.

Dr. L. Daniel Maxim was highly respected within the Recreational Boating Safety (RBS) Community. COMO Maxim was a former ANACO-RB and served as the Chairman of the National Boating Safety Advisory Council (NBSAC). A prodigious educator and author, he made countless contributions to help educate the public about RBS. This award honors his legacy of superior education performance by recognizing the best-of-the-best Auxiliary Instructors. It is additionally inspired by a similar award the US Power Squadrons confer on their very best Instructors – The Chapman Award.

We believe recognizing Instructor excellence by conferring a national level award to our best-of-the-best will motivate and inspire our entire Instructor cadre to reach beyond the comfortable or ordinary to achieve the extraordinary. Expected benefits of competing for the award include, but are not limited to:

  • Increase in diversity of courses offered by flotillas and additional numbers of classes offered
  • Improvement in Public Education and Member Training Instructor effectiveness and performance
  • Improved mentorship of newer or lesser experienced Instructors
  • Development of new and innovative teaching methods and techniques
  • Development of new and innovative teaching aids
  • Pride and satisfaction that comes with competing to be recognized as being the best-of-the-best
