Ways to Serve

The number of opportunities for service in the Coast Guard Auxiliary can be overwhelming. This page links to documents and blog posts which describe common and not so common ways in which our members serve the Coast Guard and the American people.

Getting Started:
As a new member starting in the Auxiliary we recommend pursing one or more of the core Recreational Boating Safety qualifications. These are core Auxiliary missions and serve to introduce a new member to our qualification processes. Please have a discussion with your mentor as to which of these is the best place to start. The Vessel Examiner and Program Visitor qualifications are the most straightforward to achieve.

Vessel Examiner
Program Visitor
Instructor
Public Affairs Specialist

Beyond the core RBS qualifications:

Operations:
Division 7 has a very active surface operations program and a number of key members who participate in the air operations program. The best way to get started in the surface program is to participate in the Flotilla 73 Crew/Coxswain Academy. This Academy has been held annually for the last five years.

Other qualifications:
The Auxiliary National Training Department has an excellent guide to qualifications. The current edition can be found here (if this link is broken please visit http://www.cgaux.org/training/ and click on Qualification Guide)
