Flotilla 9-5 Members (and Officer Snook) Support Dee Davis During Aquatic Invasive Species Presentation at the Annual ‘Colorado River Law Enforcement Association Conference’ in Laughlin, Nevada Jan 24th, 2017.

Article and Photo submitted by Vice Flotilla Commander 09-05 Richard Callen:

The “CRLEA”, is an association of local, state, and federal law enforcement officials and their civilian counterparts from states bordering the Colorado River (Arizona, California, Nevada and Utah). These officials work to reduce accidents that result in boating fatalities, injuries, and property damage to improve boating safety through fostering interstate cooperation, uniform boating laws, and education.

Agencies and organizations include Arizona Game and Fish Department, Nevada Department of Wildlife, United States Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Bureau of Land Management, Utah State Parks, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, Mohave County Sheriff’s Office, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, Lake Havasu Police Department, La Paz County Sheriff’s Department, and many others.

United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Member Dee (Quagga Dee) Davis has been on contract as an instructor for Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission doing inspection & decontamination training (WIT level II) classes with Wen Baldwin since 2009. She has been an instructor with USCGA for 15 years teaching Boating & Water Safety to over 60,000 elementary children in Clark County. Her and her husband Michael have been boaters on Lake Mead for over 25 years and have first hand knowledge of how the Quagga infestation has impacted the community

“Quagga Dee” presented a ' Marine Invasive Species' workshop to the CRLEA conference with the assistance of our own Auxiliary ‘Officer Snook’ Public Affairs Mascot (Flotilla 9-5 Commander Robert Cromley brought Officer Snook to life)! Vice Commander Rich Callen escorted Officer Snook through the Conference area, introducing him to attendees. Many of those attendees were Wildlife Officers and FVC Callen insured each that Officer Snook was indeed a protected Species’!

It was a pleasure to be invited to the Conference and assist Dee Davis in her excellent program designed to educate the public boaters and law enforcement agencies associated with protecting our 19 western state waterways in the identification, control and eradication of invasive species such as the Quagga and Zebra mussels.

A special thanks to 9-5 FC Bob Cromley for making 'Officer Snook' a hit!

Flotilla 9-5 would like to wish everyone a 'Very Happy Holiday Season' and a 'Safe and Prosperous' 2017.

Local Las Vegas United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotillas Represented at the Nellis Air Force Base '75 Years of Air Power' Aviation Nation Air Show

 - Article submitted by Flotilla 09-05 Vice Commander (elect) Rich Callen -

On Saturday, November 11th and Sunday, November 12th, 2016 Nellis Air Force Base was proud to present, to the Southern Nevada Community, the ’75 Years of Air Power' air show and open house. Attendees experienced exciting aerial acts, an array of static displays of aircraft from both past and present and have a chance to interact with Air Force Personnel who carry out the Nellis mission. There were over fifty different types of airplanes and helicopters on display and local media reported almost three hundred thousand visitors over the two-day event. Each day of the event was capped off by a thrilling aerial display by the United States Air Force Thunderbirds.

Twelve members from local US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotillas 09-05 and 09-06 staffed an information booth of displays and free literature about the Coast Guard Auxiliary’s programs to promote safety to the area recreational boaters, invasive marine species awareness, the importance of wearing and proper care of Personal Flotation Devices (life jackets) and many other aspects of the Auxiliary Mission, Areas of Responsibilities and opportunities for the public to get involved with the Auxiliary.

A highlight of the Auxiliary exhibit was a static display of a United States Coast Guard MH-65D Search and Rescue Helicopter flown in from Air Station San Francisco in honor of the event. The MH-65D is the most powerful and advanced-designed helicopter in the Coast Guard air fleet. The Auxiliary members were proud to provide logistical and security support to the helicopter air crew as the combined display attracted over one hundred thousand air show guests.

Las Vegas Auxiliary Flotillas, again, Help Lead the City of Las Vegas Veteran’s Day Parade.

Press Release and Photo submitted by FSO 09-05 Richard Callen:

Billed as "the largest veteran’s parade west of the Mississippi," the annual event kicked off Friday in downtown Las Vegas at 10:00 AM.

With over 100 entrants including the Navy band that flew in from San Diego to march in the event, joined a host of veteran-service participants. Organizations such as American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, marching bands, honor guards and high school ROTC groups from across the Las Vegas Valley, per the Las Vegas Review Journal newspaper, also participated. The Review Journal reports that there are 11,400 active service members, 7,620 reservists and over 228,000 veterans residing in the State of Nevada.

The parade is produced by the Veterans Action Group, a nonprofit volunteer organization. Vietnam-era Navy veteran Dixon Keller, a member of the organizing committee, is also a Division Staff Officer of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Southern Nevada Division Nine, of District 11 South, headquartered in San Diego, California.

The organizers planned on well over 10,000 spectators to line the parade route on Fourth Street between Charleston Boulevard and Ogden Avenue. Las Vegas media sources estimated the actual attendance to be over 50,000 people, exceeding the 2015 parade attendance.

Members of local Clark County, Nevada Flotillas 114 09-05 and 09-06 entered mobile displays detailing the many aspects of boating safety matters the Auxiliary provides to Southern Nevada. A special guest of the Auxiliary this year was ‘Coastie’, a miniature radio-controlled replica of a United States Coast Guard Cutter capable of interacting with the crowds, especially children. Parade-goers were entertained by ‘Coastie’ weaving along the parade route, honking its horn, blinking eyes and talking to the parade watchers while promoting the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Mission Message of Safe Boating.

A special thanks to all our military; active, reserve, retired and no longer with us, on this Veteran’s Day.

Flotilla 9-5 Members Join National Park Service Safe Boating Display at the Clark County Fairgrounds.

Article and Photo submitted by FSO 09-05 Richard Callen:

On Sunday, October 23, 2016 members of Metropolitan Las Vegas Flotilla 9-5 members joined volunteers of the National Park Service in conducting a Safe Boating Display. The event was held in the ‘Bluegrass Music Festival’ at the Clark County Fairgrounds in Logandale, Nevada. Flotilla Commander Bob Cromley and Flotilla Staff Members Wendy Park and Rich Callen joined with National Park service volunteers Jim Reilly and his boating safety partner in displaying a trailerable outboard motor powered volunteer-manned NPS (National Park Service) patrol and search and rescue vessel.

In addition to answering questions from the public about the display vessel, the functions of the National Park Service and the United States Coast Auxiliary services to the public in the Lake Mead Recreational Area, the Auxiliary and National Park volunteers hosted several children and young adults on board the vessel and demonstrated several life-saving techniques such as proper delivery (tossing) of floatation gear and life rings to those in distress. The youths were great students and soon became adept at tossing life rings directly over the practice targets.

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary appreciates the offer from National Park Service to participate in the event and looks forward to building an even stronger foundation of cooperation with NPS in service to the boating public and furthering boating safety education in Clark County.

NACON (National Convention) 2016 in Phoenix -- This year’s convention was held at the beautiful Arizona Grand Resort and Spa, and had a lot going on – from informative workshops to some great networking opportunities, along with a chance to get a behind-the-scenes view of the Auxiliary organization at work. The members had the opportunity to meet and talk with Auxiliarists from other countries such as Australia, Dominican Republic and the Philippines. Met some of the Coast Guard Admirals that appreciate the valuable contributions of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, along with observing the election and appointments of the new National Leadership team.

Flotilla Commander Bob Cromley came to Phoenix several days earlier and completed the Auxiliary Leadership and Management School (AUXLAMS AUX 02) prior to joining the formal opening of the NACON event. He then joined his Flotilla Staff Members Wendy Park and Rich Callen in attending workshops and seminars such as Mandated Training Updates, changes to the Auxiliary Procedures Manual testing (Basic Qualification Course II), Leadership by Staff Members, Recruiting Techniques, as examples of the many learning opportunities available at NACON 2016. Our Commander and Staff officers will be sharing many items of interest and importance to members in the coming weeks.

Hearty congratulations to 114-09-05 Flotilla Commander Cromley for completing the AUXLAMS AUX 02 course!
