What is a VESSEL SAFETY CHECK

A Vessel Safety Check is a courtesy examination done by a certified vessel examiner to promote boating safety and awareness.  It is done to educate boaters and help them meet state and federal inspection guidelines for safety equipment and vessel requirements.  Knowing that the boat has the necessary equipment to save lives and summon help gives boaters and their guests peace of mind as well as a safer boating experience.

A Coast Guard Vessel Safety Check is NO COST to you.  It is performed at your boat (whether in a slip, a ramp, or your driveway) with the owner/operator present.

If you don't pass, no report is filed and no penalties are levied.  Only a written report will be given with a checklist of what needs to be corrected.  Once corrections have been made, you can schedule a re-inspection.  If it passes, you will be given your Vessel Safety Check decal to put on your boat.  This will show the Coast Guard, Harbor Patrol, and other law enforcement agencies that your boat is in compliance with state and federal laws.

Some of the benefits of having a Vessel Safety Check done may include discount on your missing or discrepant items (if you show your examiner-signed VSC report), lowered insurance rate (check with your agent), and, most importantly, peace of mind.

It’s free and could save your life and those you love.

An example of some of the items checked include:
Life Jackets
Registration and numbering
Navigation lights
Ventilation
Fire extinguishers
Distress signals (flares, horn, etc.)
Battery cover and connections

All of these items are currently required by state and federal laws and, if missing or non-operating, can result in a citation if your vessel is inspected by the Coast Guard.

The Vessel Safety Check gives you a risk-free way to check that you meet the legal minimums and to potentially avoid a citation later.
