 Eleanor (Ellie) Sadler
CG AUX Crew Striker

ellie on patro;e

Ellie has completed her shoreside sign offs for Crew and is now
working on her underway skills on the Auxiliary Facility Sunrise.
Her first training event was under a Dolphin helicopter with JoAnn
Dunaway FC 12, Oleg Khainovski FSO-OP and Ray Dunaway
FSO-MA as her mentors.

rescue swimmers

Air Station San Francisco requested that Sunrise pick up two CG
swimmers at the YBI Dock to start the training. The Air Station had the
first helo pick up the swimmers from the water and a second helo then
lowered an Emergency Dewatering Pump followed by a Rescue Basket
on board Sunrise. This made sure that Ellie was kept very busy.
She was up to the task and completed the operation with a nice smile.

Maritime Interdiction Operation: June 11, 2013

Inter-Agency Cooperation A Success Detecting Radio Active Contraband

facilities

Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotillas 12 (Sausalito) and 14 (San Rafael) often work together in an intra-agency effort to serve the Coast Guard and the public. Helicopter Operations, Search and Rescue, Windsurfing and Kite Patrols are just a few of the ways we serve. But as part of Team Coast Guard we also serve with other public safety and security agencies on many operations.

In June Flotilla 12 and Flotilla 14 members aboard facility Sunrise with Rae Kleinen as coxswain, served as the focal point of a comprehensive inter-agency MIO (Maritime Interdiction Operation). This training operation involved the Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary along with law enforcement and other government agencies from across the Bay Area.

All eyes were on Sunrise as the target boat carrying the contraband material. We were tracked, monitored and eventually boarded and inspected by various agency’s personnel as part of the training mission. The operation went smoothly, was considered by all as a great success and we were able to enjoy lunch with a few of our participating colleagues at the YBI dining facility post operation. In addition to Coxswain Rae Kleinen, aboard Sunrise were Peter Thorner of Flotilla 12, and Jerel Berkov and Steven Bustin of Flotilla 14 along with personnel from participating agencies.

Striker Maria Goodavage On Helo Ops With Sunrise June 7, 2013

Maria Goodavich

Maria Goodavage first Crew training on the water was on Sunrise, 361224. It came on a very windy day but Maria was up to the challenge. With two helos in the air taking turns lowering a Rescue Basket and Dewatering Pump, Maria was able to keep a big smile through the practice sessions with Air Station San Francisco. Onboard Sunrise with Maria were JoAnn & Ray Dunaway and Rick Saber acting as Crew and Mentors to the Striker.

Maria bring her own skills to Fl 12 as she is a published author and married to a Party Boat Skipper. He charters ARGO, a sport fishing vessel on SF Bay out of Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. She will make a fine deckhand as well as an asset to the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Station Golden Gate Case #273 -July 7, 2013

Case #273

While conducting Sail/Kite Patrol for Station Golden Gate at Crissy Field on
July 7, Auxiliary Vessel Sunrise was called by STGG on VHF radio that a Kiter was down and calling for assistance. After receiving the location as the North Tower of the Golden Gate Bridge, we proceeded at “Best Speed” and quickly located and recovered the distressed kite, board and swimmer. We returned him to his launch point at Crissy Field he left with a big smile and many, many thanks.
We watched him paddle to the safety of the sandy beach as he left us with a friendly wave.
Needless to say, he was a very happy soul to return to the beach. On board Sunrise as Crew were Bob Golden, Bart Rugo and Crew Striker Maria Goodavage, with Rae Kleinen as Coxswain.
