The U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary's Boating Skills and Seamanship (BS&S) course is a comprehensive course designed for both the experienced and the novice boater. The course consists of 13 lessons, providing up-to-date knowledge for handling boats in all conditions.

Instruction emphasizes navigation, laws, ethics, personal safety and the proper use of boats. Wisconsin boating safety certification or out of state equivalent certification is required for operators born on or after Jan. 1, 1989. Anyone is eligible to take the class and receive a safety education completion certificate, however, courses are designed at a 5th grade level or up.
