VHF Radio Usage Primer

  • Who needs a VHF radio when I have my cell phone?  You might be surprised.
  • A VHF radio is regulated differently than its cousin, the FRC family radio.  The FCC requires that you follow certain protocols when using a VHF.  Do you know how to properly hail another vessel, make an emergency broadcast, or what channels to use when talking to your buddy?

Digital Selective Calling (DSC) VHF Radio

  • This is the new guy on the block.  In addition to going digital on the VHF frequencies, these radios make it a one-button operation to send out an emergency call with your specific boat information already included.  This Boat/US article is an excellent resource to set yours up.
  • Rather see a video?  Auxiliarist Rusty Gardner demonstrates how the DSC radio works in an emergency situation.  It's fast and when time is of the essence, it could help save your life.

Global Positioning System (GPS)

  • The Global Positioning System is just as wonderful to use on the water as it is in your car.  However, the lack of streets and house numbers on the water makes it a little more difficult to use.  Not to worry, improve your skills and understanding here.

EPIRB

  • If you are planning a trip on the "Big Water", the Electronic Position Indicating Radio Beacon is a safety item well worth considering.  Learn more about what it does here.

Knots

  • Marlinespike knowledge is an essential part of the dedicated mariner's toolkit. Disasters loom when the wrong knots are used or improperly tied.  Here you will find a collection of animated knots being tied where you can practice patiently while watching the process repeat itself until you've got it right.

Licenses

  • Would you like to get your Captain's License?  The OUPV or 6-Pack license is required for small boat charters.  You can find the criteria and forms for those as well as the Limited or Master Licensing necessary to run the "Big Stuff" .
