Vessel Safety Check

Get your vessel checked for safey, it's FREE.

An Auxiliarist conducting a vessel safety check

The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) program is a safety check service provided free to owners or operators of recreational boats and certain Federal, State, and local government-owned boats.  Uninspected vessels carrying six or fewer passengers for hire may have a VSC.

The same is true for boats owned by scouting/youth organizations, which do not come under the provisions for inspection and certification.  It heightens your awareness of critical safety issues through one-on-one contact with a trained Coast Guard Auxiliary Vessel Examiner.

A VSC is your best way of learning about problems that might put you in violation of state or federal laws or, worse, create danger for you or your passengers on the water.

Vessel Examiner

Our Vessel Examiners have been trained and qualified in inspecting recreational vessels for compliance with federal, state, and local boating safety requirements.  The Examiner will check the presence and condition of approximately fifteen items required by state and federal regulations.  Additionally, they will discuss items that are recommended but not required, and answer your questions on boating safety.  There are no penalties for not successfully completing a Vessel Safety Check.

The Vessel Examiner will provide you with a copy of the Vessel Safety Check form, allowing you to make the recommended safety improvements at your own discretion.  As soon as the improvements have been made you can arrange to have your vessel re-examined.

Seal of Safety Decal

The Seal of Safety decal, similar to the one at right, is awarded upon completion of the Vessel Safety Check and is affixed immediately by the operator in the presence of the Vessel Examiner.

The Seal of Safety decal attests to the fact that your boat is in compliance with Federal and State requirements.  It shows that you are a responsible and conscientious operator of a safely equipped boat.  Many insurance companies offer discounts to owners who have successfully completed a VSC.  Consult with your insurance agent to verify availability.

Getting your Vessel Checked for Safety

Prior to the start of the boating season, you may request to have a VSC where ever you have your vessel stored or bring your vessel to our examiner.  Contact our Vessel Examination staff officer to arrange a time.

To arrange a vessel examination that works with your schedule, fill out our Courtesy Vessel Examination request form.  A vessel examiner will call you to make arrangements.
