Marine Safety : Trident : Training Ribbon

Earning this award should be your first step in the Trident program.Once attained, many of the MSTR requirements are also prerequisites for Professional Qualification Standards (PQS’s) that you may wish to pursue in your Auxiliary career.A star device for this ribbon is earned for each PQS that is completed and has a Letter of Designation (LoD) issued. To earn the MSTR, you must complete:

  1. Introduction to Marine Safety and Environmental Protection (IMSEP) course
    1. Intro to Marine Safety and Environmental Protection (pdf)
    2. This course is designed to provide an extensive background in the history, policies, laws and regulations pertaining to the Marine Safety and Environmental Protection missions. It is the Auxiliary equivalent of the 12-week Coast Guard Marine Science Technician A-School. The course is available on this website by clicking on the link above. The exam is available on the National Testing Center.
  2. Good Mate Course
    1. The Good Mate Manual (pdf)
    2. This course was developed by the Ocean Conservancy and is designed to encourage ocean and waterway conservation by boaters. The course material is available on this website by clicking on the link above. The exam is available on the National Testing Center.
  3. Incident Command System (ICS) courses 100 / 200 / 700 / 800
  4. ICS course 210 (Coast Guard taught) or ISC 300 (FEMA taught)
  5. At least one Auxiliary marine safety program PQS

The first three items are home-study. The ICS courses are completed through the FEMA website. The final exam for the IMSEP and the Good Mate Courses are at the National Testing Center (NTC) website. Use the same user name and password as you use for the eDirectory. The IMSEP appears as MSEP and the Good Mate Course appears as GMATE.
