Local Boating Safety

Free Vessel Safety Examination

A Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is a courtesy examination of your boat to verify the presence and condition of certain safety equipment required by State and Federal regulations. The Vessel Examiner (VE) is a trained specialist and is a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. The VE will check your required equipment, make certain recommendations, and discuss safety issues with you. A VSC will help ensure that your boating experience is always safe and enjoyable.

This is not a boarding or a law enforcement function. In fact, your participation is completely voluntary. No citations will be given during our examination, and we will not notify the authorities of any infractions. This is all an effort to keep the experience worry-free and educational.

We will supply you with a copy of our evaluation so that you may follow the suggestions. Vessels that pass will be able to display our distinctive VSC decal which is valid until the end of the year. The decal does not exempt you from law enforcement boarding, but you can be more confident that your wallet will survive if you are! Plus, isn't knowing that your boat is safe to use worth 15 minutes of your time?

For more information

To schedule a Vessel Safety Check, contact our Flotilla. We currently have eight qualified Vessel Examiners in our flotilla - plus all the Examiners in the other two Coastal Mississippi flotillas - just itching to inspect your boat or paddlecraft!

We also schedule "Ramp Days" every once in a while. During these, we go out to a local boat ramp and ask boaters if they would like their FREE safety inspection to be performed. Ramp Days will be posted on our Upcoming Events page as well as on our Flotilla Calendar.

So, whether you come to a Ramp Day or schedule your very own inspection, the US Coast Guard Auxiliary is ready and willing to ensure you're at your safest on the water!

If you don't live in our immediate area, that's okay! You can visit the main Vessel Safety Check site and request a VSC from an Examiner in your area!

This video is of our local news station, WLOX, doing a piece on our Vessel Safety Checks. This is Flotilla 3-5's work, but you can expect the same experience with ours and other flotillas across the nation! Come get your Vessel Safety Check today!

Alcohol and boating don't mix.

And come home safely!

Remember, they float; you don't.
