UPDATE: MANY COAST GUARD AUXILIARY ACTIVITIES ARE NOW AUTHORIZED

This message is explained in detail by National Commodore, Larry King as follows:

"The basic principle for all to understand is that all
non-operational activities of the Coast Guard Auxiliary are permitted if no
Coast Guard funds will be used and no reimbursement for any expense, including
travel, is customarily provided by the Coast Guard or will be sought from the Coast Guard.

For example, members may:
•Attend unit meetings
•Attend training ashore
•Conduct PE classes
•Conduct VSCs
•Inspect UPVs
•Engage in FS missions
•Engage in Chaplain Support missions
•Stand the watch
•Conduct PA Activities 2
•Hold unit Elections
•Hold Changes of Watch
•Conduct D-Trains
•Write articles for unit newsletters
•Operate unit stores
•Man a booth at a boat show
•Conduct MDVs

This is NOT a complete list of activities that are authorized during the funding hiatus. Virtually ANY Coast Guard Auxiliary activity authorized by the Auxiliary Manual is permitted other than operational activities or an activity where Coast Guard funds are spent or are expected to support the activity. Travel associated with nonoperational activities is permitted. If a district authorizes reimbursement to the traveler in accordance with its usual practice, that is permitted as long as the funds come from the district's treasury. No Coast Guard funds may be used for travel. Reimbursement for travel by the Coast Guard should not be expected and should not be sought from the Coast Guard.

Uniforms may be worn in accordance with the Commandant and unit policies in effect prior to the funding hiatus. The funding hiatus DOES NOT affect a member's entitlement to liability and worker's compensation coverage. If prior to the funding hiatus, those protections were available for the specific activity in which the member was engaged, it is available now.

What we CANNOT routinely engage in are operational activities. Those activities that normally require orders from a Coast Guard order issuing authority and routinely include reimbursement of specified expenses incurred in the execution of the mission are NOT permitted. We cannot engage in any operational mission unless it is specifically ordered by a Coast Guard OIA and is in direct support
of:
- Search and Rescue (SAR)
- Aids to Navigation Port and Environmental Safety
- Commercial Vessel Safety (CVS)
- Marine Environmental Response (MER)

If called to duty and ordered to engage in an operational mission, whatever
reimbursement for expenses, SAMA, meals, travel, etc, are customarily provided
WILL BE PAID when the funding hiatus is over and a budget is in place."

Respectfully,
Larry L. King
